Editor’s Note: For this edition, staff writer Sarah Ogletree has written a poem, entitled “Gather at the Table.” Read it below.
We circled up around the table,
My father squeezed my hand,
And then began the sacred moment,
By which we understand.
We bowed our heads,
And my mother’s voice,
Rang out with gratitude,
“We’re grateful for each blessing,
We’re grateful for the food.”
We sat and passed the mashed potatoes,
The turkey and the corn,
With “where’s the salt?” and “where’s the pepper?”
“I remember when you were born…”
The meal was messy,
And I was stressed,
But what a kindness it was,
To be together in this way,
What a good that does.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all. I hope you were able to enjoy rest and rejuvenation amidst the coming of finals and term papers. I am grateful for you and for this place!
